A Fine Looking Band, Right There I Do Say

I have a confession for my long-time friends. I’ve been thinking about it for a while and I just can’t live in denial any longer. At the risk of alienating friends and family, I just have to say it. I’m The Nickelback Guy.

Yes, that’s right. I’m the guy who likes Nickelback and thinks that they are pretty cool. Yes, all of their songs sound alike. But when all of your songs sound awesome, then why is that a bad thing? (Editor’s Note: I’ve tried to explain this to him, folks, but he just doesn’t get it.)

Dear Santa, All praise is due to Allah, who built the heavens and earth in justice, and created man as a favor and grace from Him. I begin by discussing the state of my endeavors for world peace. According to the Qur’an, it has fallen to me, a true worshiper of God and follower of […]

By now you have a living story in your head. It’s scratching and clawing from the inside, trying to get out. To this point, you have barely dipped your pen in the inkwell by writing a logline and theme. You have started to organize your approach by putting together a story canon. It’s now time to craft a story skeleton upon which you can later hang all of the necessary organs and flesh (in some cases quite a gory endeavor). Time to add to your treatment document.

Living as a writer, whether you are published or not, has many perks. The greatest of which, in my opinion, is the constant and unstoppable parade of stories in your head. Now that you have reached the point where you have written a logline and followed up with theme, the creative energy is undoubtedly sparking. You find yourself thinking about your story often. You can’t help it. You can be anywhere, doing anything, and your story comes to mind. Your characters speak to you (hopefully you don’t converse with them—audibly at least). The plot of your story begins to roll out on the floor of your imagination like a tapestry of color and intersecting lines. You smell what your characters smell; you see what your characters see; you sympathize with their pain and revel in their triumphs.

With the November’s election, the 2-year-old practice of reaching into the not-so-deep grassroots pockets of America and handing out steady lumps of cash to special interests and Hollywood style political endeavors seems to have whipsawed on he who holds the nation’s checkbook. However, if one has learned anything from watching politics carve its mark in the cranium of America, one is prompted to recall, even in the face of a perceived shift of power—Democrat to Republican–the words of Pete Townsend, “Meet the new boss, the same as the old boss.” I propose that there is a third boss worth considering.

Hello!  It’s time again for another Technically Speaking article!  (Ok, ok, fine…it’s the first one.  You caught me, happy?)  This article series will investigate some of the general chaos in the technical realm.  Although Technology can be scary, we will try to bring it down-home and wrap it up with a sparkle-y, happy rainbow-tinged bubble-wrap […]

On a recent reading of J.R.R Tolkien’s classic “The Hobbit,” I couldn’t help but draw some comparisons between the world of Middle Earth and our own current political system. I won’t claim to be the first person to cite the obvious similarities between Gollum and Nancy Pelosi (She’s so good at riddles).

I will take credit however, for noting that the Great Goblin who lives under the Lonely Mountain and Dick Cheney both sit on thrones made from the bones of their enemies. Bonus fun fact: Once we get to the Lord of the Rings, we have nine Supreme Court Justices and nine nazgul, all wearing black robes. Also, they were all once mortal men! Coincidence? Hardly…

“Before all else, be armed.” The words of Machiavelli resound the might and clout of Rome during the age of its imperial peak. The empire of Rome dominated most of the civilized world at its zenith. Its borders spanned Europe, the Middle East, and northern Africa, swallowing and dwarfing the former Hellenistic empire of Alexander […]

Madagascar, the Dreamworks’ animated film about a small group of zoo animals that escape the big city to live in the “wild”, is exponentially better than Shark Tale, however, that probably isn’t saying a whole heck of a lot. Shark Tale, quite frankly, should never be confused with the standard for quality. In order to set a good baseline against which to make a fair comparison you really need to start with something that is perfectly average in all that it achieves, not great, but not horrible, something that just is what it is – for better or for worse. With that in mind it is probably more appropriate to start off this review by saying that Madagascar, the Dreamworks’ animated film about a small group of zoo animals that escape the big city to live in the “wild”, is every bit as good as Shrek 2.

Like so many pirates from our sordid history, Blackbeard is legend. Many people don’t even know that Blackbeard was a real pirate. The fact is, Blackbeard was one of the most notorious pirates to sail the seven seas.

Edward Teach (Blackbeard) shouted his first infant’s mewl in around 1880 in the town of Bristol, England. At an early age, Blackbeard went to sea aboard a privateer in the Spanish West Indies during the war of the Spanish Succession.
