In honor of this most esteemed holiday and all that it represents, we would like to share with you this season appropriate music video that we produced one Saturday afternoon in a corner of our office.

We have come to a place in pop culture where being a geek is all the rage. With Comicon, Dragoncon, super hero movies, 2 new Star Trek joints (one up and coming), and other countless outlets for nerds, all created with precision, talent, and marketing prowess, the powers that be have perfected the art of packaging geekdom in blazing color. They’ve shrink-wrapped it. They’ve put it out into the main stream.

Some authors pound their staves, declaring like town criers, that the best place to start when writing any story is by exploring the main characters. These authors are correct in this sentiment. There are other authors who, with perhaps an even larger staff, pound even harder, shouting that plot is the place to start and that without conflict found only in plot structure, character can not be fully fleshed out. These authors are also correct.

It is time once again for Fantasy Leagues all over to have their team drafts. My Fantasy Chess League is halfway through the season and doing decent, even though Scott went on an Anti-Semitic rant and ran off to live in Iceland (seriously, some people are just too method for their own good) – he is in the lead. However, it is draft time for my Fantasy Music Festival league.

Hello my dear friends with connections to Utah.

It is time once again for me to do a quick personal plug for our annual Comedy Short Film Festival (www.gangreneproductions.com & www.facebook.com/gangrenefilmfestival). It is only a little over a week away and I would like to encourage you to attend for a multitude of reasons (several of which I bullet-pointed last year and will now copy and paste and update where necessary).

KAYSVILLE, Utah, August 8 – After seeing the Gangrene Comedy Film Festival put on 11 years of off-the-wall shows, including such antics as luchadore wrestlers, Mini Kiss, break dancing pirates, and tap dancing grannies, it’s no surprise that fans of Gangrene are scratching their heads and wondering what Gangrene will do in 2011.

“We’ve decided to go Bigfoot,” said festival board member, Ben Fuller. “They’re furry, they’re vicious, and they make us laugh. We know our fans will love it. It’s going to be all guttural grunts and chest-pounding.”

When my dad first told me he had hooked me up with a job for the summer at a company called mediaRif, I pictured myself as your typical business woman depicted in movies, going to work in a big office space, dressed in a pinstriped suit, hair tightly wrapped in a bun with a briefcase latched to my side.

This image I had drawn up in my mind totally changed when we first drove up to the office which is an old brick building located right next to the Kaysville Theater in Kaysville, Utah. “There’s the door to your new workplace,” my dad announced amusedly, pointing to an old rickety red door on the back of a building.

Composing music can be a complicated exercise. However, if you understand a few rudiments of music theory, you can comp more quickly and with more expertise. A concept I call insta-song is great entry point to understanding music theory. Most music is made up of chord progressions. A chord progression is a series of chords […]

Note: I realize it’s been a while since I have written on this series. The reason hasn’t been because I struggle with laying out my novel writing method; the reason is, however, that I have struggled with some plot problems in the sample story embedded in this series about Gus the Plumber. I had to […]
